Land is becoming quite an expensive as well as a rare commodity which is fighting a battle with the numbers of the rising population world wide. In this context, every single inch in your home is of importance and should be put to maximum use. Enlarging existing spaces therefore becomes a necessity especially for the urban dweller. A good architectural design also becomes quite necessary so that the space is maximized in the design that is created for the proposed structure in the available land. Currently, architects are turning out unbelievable living spaces in extremely limited land areas using modern technology and implements that are available in the market.
Yet, once you start to live in the house, as time goes by, you may want additional space, for storage, for living and for various other needs, and then you want to think of improve the existing design. Spaces can be enlarged physically by adding or taking away certain elements from the areas. Many are the spaces in a house, which are not used efficiently.
To add space:
- Clear away all objects that you do not use everyday. Store them in closed boxes securely. May be you could mark on the outside of the box, what is inside them.
- You could install cupboards or racks in places where quite a lot of space is waster. A good example for this is under the staircase. This is quite a big area which is not used usually. A good set of covered cupboards or even shelves would give you extra space. Between two pillars you could install few racks. Or even you could fill up the space a little and use it as a bench.
- Make use of your wall space economically by adding upwards. When you are designing wardrobes for the rooms, build them tall so that you can use the max. height and incorporate it all inside, by installing full length doors. This way you would not have tiny spaces in corners which you could not utilize for anything else.
- Inside the bathroom, above the cistern, is an ideal place to have a few built in racks to hold your magazines and beauty products. Extension of the sink counter over the tub would give you additional space to hold all your bath products within easy reach.
- Put up all your family photographs along a wall. This will decorate your wall as well as clear space on table tops.
- Enclose little verandah areas with glass windows, so that while you make use of the space, your visual sight is not limited. Install a raw of windows and enclose your back balcony which would be an ideal utility/ laundry space. It would give you additional space as well as when opened, would bring in the breeze.
- When buying furniture, buy ones with even angles so that they fit in easily without wasting spaces.
To make space visually enlarge, use the color white as much as possible. White makes spaces look bigger and clutter free. Mirrors are also a good trick to use, as well as large paned windows with less/no mullion.
Most of all, spaces enlarge automatically, if you are careful with what you put in your spaces. Make sure that you keep them clutter free, buying only what you really need. This way you would have space as well as your house would look fashionably beautiful!!!
