Rare & Precious.........

Can you list the things in your home you think rare and precious????? Well obviously my bed is precious for me because that's where I relax but hmmm.... It's not rare though. What else..... Oh... what about jewelry??? You are getting close. I'm talking about gemstones. Gems are rare because not every country in the world has them and precious because they are unique and beautiful. What are gems? Gems are minerals that have underwent several natural process for a long time finally resulting in a hard or a soft rock formation. These rocks are polished and shaped by cutting in a way that their beauty is well exposed. Here comes the best part. Usually when we get a gemstone we let sunlight or a source of light pass through the stone so that the gemstone will refract the light beam. That's where gemstones become different from other stones. This quality is known as refraction and the ability for refraction is the refractive index. This refractive index varies from gem to gem. Diamonds has the highest of all.

Gem stones are hard to find actually. We cannot expect to go to the backyard and dig in until you hit one. There are specific places in the world where gemstones form. Rathnapura district of Sri Lanka is one such place. Perhaps Blue Sapphires of Ceylon is the best in the market. Even the Dutchess of Cambridge's guard ring which was the same of Princess Diana, was made of a large blue sapphire from Ceylon. 

Cutting and polishing increases the value of the gem. The number of facets helps the refraction so that the beauty of the gem is also enhanced. There are basic shapes into which the gems are cut into. They are,

Another interesting fact about gems is that you have a gem for your birth month which is considered as lucky. Also in Astrology, you can check in with your horoscope and even the palm reading, you can wear a suitable gemstone ring for good fortune. Here is a list of birthstones for months.
