Applying Finishes... Little Somethings For Home Part 3

In our earlier chapter of Little Somethings For Home, we discussed about the finishes and their different types. Today our article will be on applying finishes. None of the wood finishes are difficult to apply but it helps if you work in a relatively dust free environment and use clean brushes or applicators.

Preparing wood for finishing
No surface finishes, especially clear varnishes, lacquers and polishes will disguise a poorly prepared surface. Holes, dents and cracks should be filled and the wood sanded smooth. It is essential that you work in good light, preferably daylight. Some finishes exude quite unpleasant fumes so ventilate your workplace and wear a respirator.

Cellulose filler
Before applying an opaque finish, use ordinary decorator's cellulose filler to prepare the surface. Mix the powdered filler with water to a smooth ceramy paste and apply it to the surface with a flexible filling knife. Let the filler dry, then sand with medium grade garnet paper.

Getting Ready For Halloween.........

It’s Halloween on coming Friday and everyone’s getting ready for a bit of scary and ghostly adventures and festivities. Although Halloween is grandly celebrated in western hemisphere, most of the eastern countries do not. So, we thought of sharing few facts and fun ideas based on Halloween.
Halloween is a holiday celebrated on the evening of October 31 in most areas of North America and in some areas of Western Europe. It is symbolically associated with death and the supernatural. Halloween falls on the eve of All Saints’ Day, also known as Allhallows or Hallowmas, a holy day in the Roman Catholic and Anglican churches. Originally a pagan festival of the dead, All Saints’ Day was established by the Catholic Church in the 9th century to honor Christian saints. All Souls’ Day, a holy day established by the Catholic Church in the 10th century, is also closely linked to Halloween. All Souls’ Day, on November 2, is observed to help purify the spirits of the dead.
Halloween is also related to some similar folk holidays and celebrations in other countries. The Day of the Dead, a Mexican holiday that coincides with All Souls’ Day, blends Roman Catholic and Native American traditions about the souls of the dead. On the Day of the Dead, Mexicans decorate their homes with playful imagery of animated human skeletons, leave offerings of food for wandering spirits, and tend the graves of their deceased relatives.
Many of the ancient people of Europe marked the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter by celebrating a holiday in late autumn. The most important of these holidays to influence later Halloween customs was Samhain, a holiday observed by the ancient Celts, a tribal people who inhabited most of Western and Central Europe in the first millennium bc. Among the Celts, Samhain marked the end of one year and the beginning of the next. It was one of four Celtic holidays linked to important transitions in the annual cycle of seasons.

Quest Of Nostalgia... Final Chapter

“The legends they knew about the mystique horse has become true. It was standing next to Ross not letting him to touch it or ride it as if it was commanding the humans present there to avoid the battle. It was merely taking Ross’s side. The enemies were not stupid to battle against such power so they retreated back with great respect to Ross and to his villagers. After a few whiles, the beautiful black stallion went back into the forest. Ross crossed the moat and joined his villagers. He was different. He was much more capable of living up to his father’s standards. Villagers believed that the mystique horse had granted him powers. But they never knew. Ross ruled the village well and soon he became the head of several other villages nearby.
My parents as well as my friends and their parents believed this horse to be real and even today we are not allowed in the woods alone. Who knows whether it is true because there are many wild untamed horses in the forest unnaturally a large number to pack together so near humans……”

Cyndi took a while to absorb what she read. ‘It was all nonsense’ she thought. Mystique horses??? And she had no clue where this story was going. There were some pages left and she kept turning pages until she found the date Sept. 27th, 1960. And all there written was
“The path is clear, to those who peer
Search your inside and
Believe in your flames
The quest is still on….”
It sounded nothing but Cyndi could not forget the words. She went to Uncle Sam who was near the fire and gave the book to him with the confused look on her face. He signed her to sit down and he began.
“So, you read”
“Yes, but I don’t know what I was suppose to get from that. It sounded like a fairy tale” Replied Cyndi.
“Well then, do you believe in fairy tales?”
“No”

Polymer Clay Jewelry... Creating Fashion... Just the way you want it Part 3

Polymer clay is a modeling compound that is available in a wide range of colours at craft stores and stores specializing in miniatures. Pieces of polymer clay adhere to each other with light pressure, making it easy to design unique jewelry items. It hardens to a smooth, matte finish when oven baked, maintaining its prebaked size.
Jewelry pieces are designed using three basic forms of clay: the ball, the rod and the sheet. Simple balls of clay can be used for beads or they can be flattened and shaped to form discs for buttons or earrings. Rods of clay are sliced into discs or cut and rolled to form uniform balls. Sheets of clay can be rolled and cut out, cookie style, for buttons, pins or earrings.
Rods and sheets can also be used to create designs. Marbleized clay is formed by twisting rods together. Patterned designs such as a bull’s eye or pinwheel are formed using rods and sheets. These patterned designs are called canes. Thin slices cut from canes are used to embellish base pieces of clay. Different brands of polymer clay vary in firmness. To make firm clay easier to shape, soften it by cutting it into small pieces, warming them in your hands, and kneading the pieces together. Or mix firm clay with a softer clay until you have consistency that is easy to work with. Firm coloured clay can be mixed with a small amount of soft white clay without sacrificing the brightness of the colour.

Heritage.... Era of the Lion

Today's travelling story, (well obviously it's about the 8 kingdoms of past) is mainly based on the cultural aspects of my country Sri Lanka. The eight kingdoms in order are Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, Dambadeniya, Yapahuwa, Kurunegala, Gampola, Kotte and Mahanuwara (Kandy). Extending over about 2500 years, we have legends, stories and mysteries woven around a great culture. Firstly known to be "Hingala" the root of word 'Sinhala' stands to give the meaning the nation of lion. Our sources of history gives details of our origin which is believed to be from the neighbouring country India. So before I start off telling about Kingdoms, let me start off my journey with that epic saga of a nation's pride.
A pandiyan king from India had a young daughter named Suppa Devi. She was a stubborn young princess who did not heed any of her father's commands. Soon the word spread that there was a lion attacking a village belonging to king's territory and at the same time the princess ran away from home. We do not know whether the mentioned Lion was actually a lion or an etiquette given for a person. However, princess was rescued by the lion and they fell in love. The lion took her to his cave and locked her there trapping the entrance with a masiive stone.
Later, Suppa Devi gave birth to a boy and a girl. They named them as Sinha Bahu and Sinha Sevali. Sinha Bahu grew up to be a strong man just like his father. He soon started asking questions

Quest Of Nostalgia... Chapter 2

When I was 6, my father told me a story that was supposed to be a legend at his time. He wanted me to believe it so badly.
Once there lived a young boy named Ross who was the son of the Head of village near the forest. There were many horses reared by the villagers. Farmers captured some from the wild and tamed them. One day Ross and his friends went into the forbidden forest and lost their way back home. Ross found out a cave hidden behind the large bushes somewhere in the middle of the forest. They went in looking for help and shelter. They spent the night there and when they woke up in the morning, they were back at the entrance to the forest. Startled by incident they returned home with shock. Ross told his father who sent searching parties into the woods and found nothing, not even the cave hidden behind the bushes. Soon the story was forgotten by the villagers but Ross kept saying that every night he seemed to have visions of colourful lights like stars and flames of fire. His father could not say this to anyone for he himself thought Ross was an idiot.

Time flew so fast that Ross was a man now. His father was a good ruler but weak. With the knowledge that Ross's father was weak and Ross was not fit enough to take over his father's duties, heads of near by villages staged war against them. Ross's father heard the news and fell sick with pain. Villagers thought Ross was not ready but he was a talented and an intelligent fellow but he was lacking faith and confidence in himself. He thought he was an idiot and a shame to the whole family. Unable to bear the whispers of his incapability behind the back, Ross ran away from home to the forest.

Breakfast Bonuses.........

We are always reminded that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. There is a saying even telling us that "Eat like a king in the morning". It is true that breakfast is the most important meal because it is the first meal we take after 7-8 hour long sleep. The word Breakfast itself hint us that break the fasting we have been doing since our dinner last night.

Breakfast should be full of energy providing ingredients. That means it should contain all the nutrients we must have, plenty of water and fibres plus energy boost agents to keep us active throughout the day. Some people including myself often doesn't like simple breakfast like the very normal cornflakes or the cereal. So here are some of the ideas for something full of taste and nutrients for those ones.

Apple Pancakes
Ingredients
1 cup flour -- sifted
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/8 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
1/8 teaspoon cloves
3 tablespoons butter
1 egg
1/3 cup milk
2 tablespoons powdered milk
1/2 cup applesauce

Finishes...... Little Somethings For Home Part 2

Finishing is very very important because it is the finality in our work and what that tells us how exactly well it is done. A surface finish is primarily intended to protect wood from staining and prevent it becoming dirty. To most people, however the way a finish enhances the appearance of a work piece is perhaps the prime consideration.

Paint, Varnish and Lacquer
Paint, varnish and lacquer are similar in many ways, not the least being that they are being sprayed or more commonly brushed onto the surface of the work piece. Certain varnishes and paints are almost identical in composition, the main difference being that paint contains pigments that make it opaque and colourful.

Solvent based paint
Virtually all solvent based house hold paints are suitable for storage furniture. They are made by suspending solid pigment in a synthetic resin such as vinyl, acrylic or polyurethane. Most paint finishes are built up in layers; a primer coat, two undercoats and a glossy, matt or semi matt top coat. However, some heavily pigmented paints are designed to cover a work piece with only one coat.

Material Recycling..........

Today, the world's population is reaching a peak of nearly 7 billion and our planet is still the same. Think of all the waste and litter that gathers in one day throughout everywhere in world???? Humans won't have space to live if we don't get rid of them. That's why material recycling is important for us. As we all know China has the world's largest population. Here's how they recycle waste paper. I must say this is an e mail sent to me by a dear friend but I think little things like these teach us many things. Hope we could get some ideas from this.

Quest Of Nostalgia... Chapter 1

"Two scoops of Choco mint ice cream with chocolate sauce please"
Cyndi ordered her favorite at Ben & Jerry's. It was the only place she knew in the town by far for it has been only 5 days since her arrival at her uncle Sam's in Highlands. She hated the fact that every summer she was due to spend it away from home because Joanne; her mother has to devote herself for the researches she's been carrying on. That's how life is if you have a determined and dedicated scientist with the prospect of saving the world for a mother. Life was already a chapter of misery and Cyndi missed her bestie Katie back at home and above all a deep wound within her heart was still not fully recovered. It is a very hard thing to restart your life after falling from the top stair of happiness. For Cyndi, her happiness was with her father who was her mentor, friend and above all her trainer who accidentally left this world taking all the happiness with him.
If it was 5 years ago, Cyndi would love to be here but now Uncle Sam's is a modern version of hell for her. She spent most of the time inside her room writing in her journal or reading books or sometimes just staring at the mountains and forest beside the house listening to the sound of horses in the backyard. Uncle Sam has two horses named Lola and Clip. Cyndi won't go near them because they reminded her so much of her father and the times they used to spend together. Cyndi was trained for horseback riding since she was 7 by her father who loved horses very much. Living in New York and rearing animals was not possible so they used to visit Uncle Sam once in a fortnight. Cyndi was taught to love animals, to treat them as brothers and sisters, care for them at all times but now she hardly tried to look at them even.

Vitamins & Minerals............ Food Facts-1

What are Vitamins and Minerals??? What is the role of them inside our body??? Vitamins and minerals are two main important nutrients we need carry out our day today functions. Vitamins and minerals make people's bodies work properly. Although you get vitamins and minerals from the foods you eat every day, some foods have more vitamins and minerals than others.

Vitamins fall into two categories: fat soluble and water soluble. The fat-soluble vitamins are A, D, E, and K which dissolve in fat and can be stored in your body. The water-soluble vitamins  C and the B complex vitamins (such as vitamins B6, B12, niacin, riboflavin, and folate)  need to dissolve in water before your body can absorb them. Because of this, your body can't store these vitamins. Any vitamin C or B that your body doesn't use as it passes through your system is lost. So you need a fresh supply of these vitamins every day.

Whereas vitamins are organic substances (made by plants or animals), minerals are inorganic elements that come from the soil and water and are absorbed by plants or eaten by animals. Your body needs larger amounts of some minerals, such as calcium, to grow and stay healthy. Other minerals like chromium, copper, iodine, iron, selenium, and zinc are called trace minerals because you only need very small amounts of them each day.Vitamins and minerals boost the immune system, support normal growth and development, and help cells and organs do their jobs. For example, you've probably heard that carrots are good for your eyes. It's true! Carrots are full of substances called carotenoids that your body converts into vitamin A, which helps prevent eye problems.Another vitamin, vitamin K, helps blood to clot. Vitamin K is present in green leafy vegetables, broccoli, and soybeans. And to have strong bones, you need to eat foods such as milk, yogurt, and green leafy vegetables, which are rich in the mineral calcium.

Men in Blacks, Blues & Reds.....

It's all about guys. Just like all the women, men too have interests in clothing selections and accessories. Here are some professional ideas I gathered combined with some reviews from the community about fashion clothing, matching and comfy kits.

It is not that easy to choose a matching t shirt or a shirt for your guy like you do for yourself. First of all go for a matching color. Of course, it's a matter of choice but be careful about your skin color too. It will be nice if you can go for a color that both satisfy your liking and matches with your skin color. Next is the time of the day you intend to wear it. If it is night time, don't hesitate to put your hands on vibrant yet elegant colors like Black, Navy blue, Dark purple, Crimson etc. If it is for an official cause like job interview, stick with the traditional fail proof colors like light blue, grey. If you are looking to portray a more lively image, choose bright, unconventional colors. Bright greens and oranges are relatively popular, as well as pink. Next think whether you like a print or a pattern or just the plain color. Sometimes plain colors can add a bit sexier look for generally good looking guys but no offense you can choose whatever you wish.

Deadly Road Runners....

This one is for all those sleepy drivers. Drowsy drivers can be just as dangerous as drunk drivers and possibly even more so, because they often don't realize that they are impaired. Driving for eight hours straight more than doubles your risk of crashing- making you as dangerous as a driver with a blood alcohol count of 0.05%. Our body is designed to endure two sleeping periods. The primary one is between midnight and 6 am. The other one is early to mid afternoon. Most people will attribute this afternoon sleepiness to what or how much they ate for lunch. But the real culprit is our biological clock; specifically the circadian rhythms that dictate when our bodies are geared for sleep.

Although we may like to consider ourselves more productive when we sleep less, we're much more efficient when we are well rested. Getting adequate sleep sustains our alertness and our mental performance. Most adults need seven and a half  to eight hours of sleep a night to perform at their best. Researches show results that subjects whose sleep was restricted to between four and six hours per night for two weeks demonstrated reduced mental performance comparable with those who hadn't slept for up to two days. Even more troubling, the subjects reported feeling only slightly sleepy when their performance was actually at its worst.

Fatigue can affect anyone on the road, but some are at higher risk for fatigue- related crashes. People who work long hours like more than 60 hours a week has a risk increased up to 40%. Shift workers should know that our body is never fully adjusts to shift work because the sleep wake cycle is dictated by darkness and night. Night shift workers tend to get less sleep than those who work nine to five and are more vulnerable to the effects of their bodies' circadian rhythms as they drive home from work. Young people are particularly vulnerable to the effects of their circadian rhythms. They are also more likely to be sleep deprived, driving at night, taking risks or affected by alcohol. Although both genders are equally sleep deprived, males are responsible for approximately three out of four fall-asleep crashes. People with sleeping disorders such as sleep apnoea, restless legs syndrome and insomnia can increase your crash risk up to seven times.
There are many myths and facts about drowsy driving too. Here are some of these you may wanna avoid.

A Page From Ann's Diary.....

Dear Diary,
I thought today was going to be just another boring day for me as usual. With all the work from the office, screaming of my boss and other chores at home plus loads of love from John; the thing that makes me want to live. I can't believe it's been 2 years for our marriage and we are happy as newly weds. Okay enough about that. But today must be one of the most unforgettable days in my life. You know what? It is true that most interesting things in our life happens suddenly when we least expect them.

John drove me as usual to the office. I kissed him good bye and went into the office. I remember every brick and step on my way, every shop, every tree, every lamp post that I pass for I have been doing this for 5 years now. But today it was a bit different. There was a man dressed carelessly sitting on the pavement with a very dirty looking flute in his hand. He looked like a begger but how on earth he came here I do not know. He had less teeth, his hair was not combed for ages I suppose. Still, he some how managed to fit into the picture. I don't know or it may have been my imagination, he slightly smiled at me. Well I ignored him and then went into the office to find my pile of work waiting to be done.

Guess!!!!!!!!!!

Guess what these are made of if you can!!!!
It takes a great deal of patience and creativity to create something like this. This structure is made of something simple that we use daily. It's really amazing how some brains think of turning something cheap and regardless to something valuable and beyond imagination. I found this pretty cool and thought you people would appreciate too.

Loose Fat.... Is It???

Everyone carves for that V figured shape to be on their body. Looking thin is a plus point and it has very many healthy benefits too like good blood pressure levels, good heart, active muscles and lesser freckles and wrinkles at old age. Not only these but there are other numerous benefits too like being attractive and sexy looking. But is it good enough??? I mean being thin??? No, it is said that too much of everything is bad and it is true. Too much of thinness is not good at all too. All you have to maintain is a good V figured shape, a flat belly and active muscles.
Obesity has become a very nasty problem in many countries especially developed ones like US. It prevents you from eating whatever you fell like eating, doing leisure time activities like playing with friends, keeping away from the beach and swimsuits etc. Most of all, obesity cause laziness and it makes your cells die quickly because they won't get to work. But don't worry. Fat is not a problem anymore. Here are some of the methods we gathered up and they are pretty interesting to try. What you need is a little patience and a bit of dedication.

Green tea

Green tea isn't known only for its cancer-fighting benefits: It may help boost your metabolism, too. People who took green-tea extract three times a day saw their metabolic rate increase by about 4 percent. (You could burn an extra 60 calories a day, which equals about six pounds a year!) It may be because green tea contains catechins, which increase levels of the metabolism-speeding brain chemical norepinephrine.

Elephant Path..........

I love wild life travelling. Jungles and forests are places where you can visit even 100 times yet be surprised at every sight. Well, what I find interesting is that the different kinds of animal species and their activities you actually get to experience and watch. Above all elephants are the most attractive. They play a vital role acting as keystone species to the Eco system they belong. Elephant or Elephas maximus is basically in two kinds as African elephant and Asian elephant. They are mammals so we can see small elephant babies feeding. Elephants are very intelligent almost equal to that of dolphins and they are the largest living animals on earth. Pretty cool, ah??
Kandy Perahera
A subspecies known as Elephas maximus maximus found only in Sri Lanka is what I have seen. Well it is pretty hard to stay without seeing an elephant if you live in Sri Lanka as from the ancient times, elephant has been considered here as a flagship species. So it means there are plenty of places within the country for elephants. As far as we know elephants do not have natural predators thanks to being the largest to be on earth. However elephants are facing the threats of extinction due to hazardous and harmful activities of humans. As a step to conserve the elephants in Sri Lanka, Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage has been built. Now there are about 80 orphaned elephants care given.  Another place is there named "Ath Athuru Sewana" where young calves are nurtured and released back to wild. These two places are much popular among foreign tourists. You can actually see elephants feeding, bathing and many other activities of them.

Little Somethings For Home.... Part 1

Man made boards
The development of man made baords has profoundly influenced the design and construction of storage furniture. Previously only solid timber was available and considerable skill was required to make and assemble wide flat boards of even thickness that would not suffer from wrapping and splitting with changes in humidity. But stable man made boards change all that. In just a few hours, you can now make a cabinet that would have aken days of painstaking work to produce before the advent of factory made preveneered boards. Below are some of the more common boards that you will find at any good timber merchant.

  • Plywood

Plywood is a laminated material made by gluing thin sheets of wood together in layers to form boards of various thicknesses. The grain of alternate sheets are set at right angles to one another to reduce the tendancy for wood to move as it shrinks or swells. Normally plywood is made with an odd number of piles for balanced construction. Decorative veeners are often used for the surface or face piles. To reduce manufacturing costs, a slightly inferior surface veneer may be used on the back. It is a relatively cheap board comprising three birch piles only, is often used for drawer bottoms. Being flexible, it can also be nailed or glued over a curved frame, forming a tough rigid skin.

Creating Fashion... Just the way you want!!! Part 2

Gloves
Gloves can be fashionable accessories, not simply functional apparel. Whether you choose vivid, colorful gloves or opt for the ever popular basic colors, a few embellishments can add style. Decorative braid trims can be machine stitched in place along the upper edge of the glove. When attaching trims to knit gloves, make sure that embellished gloves retain enough stretch to be pulled on and off easily. For leather gloves, machine stitch the trim in place, using a leather needle or secure it with a glue intended for leather.

Buttons add a whimsical look to a glove. Choose buttons that will lie flat. Stitch them in place one at a time, without carrying threads between them to prevent catching the threads when putting on the gloves. This also ensures the necessary give between buttons.

A Letter To Daddy......

Dear Daddy,
Where to begin??? It seems only yesterday that you took me into your arms and cuddled me when I was crying in hospital. Though I don't remember anything I know you must have been really upset and really happy that day because mom left you alone giving birth to me. You never complained and you took me with a smile. You fed me, put up with my crying, you let me sleep sound at your sleepless nights. You never thought of me as a trouble. Your problems were gone with my smile. You never complained...

It was my first day at kindergarten and you were in a hurry to go to work. I felt strange with so many kids and their parents and teachers. But you knelt before me and said "Never let the fear of something take over you". I was a kid but he knew I understood it. It was hard to find money for school and you had to do overtime. No one was there to take care of me and all the burdens were on your shoulders. Yet you never complained. I know you had the chance to consider another marriage but you never did because you never wanted me to be a Cinderella. Who knows whether there will be a prince Charming for me to come and rescue me???
You gave up all your comforts to make me comfortable, you never tried even once to treat yourself better thinking of my happiness. Yet you never complained.
