Clutch Purses........

A classic clutch that coordinates with a garment completes an outfit. The flap can be shaped and embellished in a number of ways, making the design possibilities for this purse unlimited. Make a variety of pins to change the look of one basic clutch. Or for an elegant one of a kind look, embellish the flap with punch needle embroidery, creating a plush, raised design on woven fabric.

The lined purse is constructed with a zipped divider. A coat snap provides a simple closure. If desired, a shoulder strap can be attached. Choose a medium weight to heavy weight outer fabric; decorator fabrics have good body and are treated to repel soil. For added support, interface the outer and lining fabrics. Choose a crisp sew-in interfacing for the outer fabric and an all purpose fusible interfacing for the lining.

To embellish the flap of a purse with punch needle embroidery, mark the flap section on the fabric and embroider the design before cutting out the flap. The punch needle is done using special needles such as Igolochkoy™ needles, available in several sizes to accommodate a variety of fabrics and threads. The needles have an adjustable depth gauge, allowing you to change the depth of the pile.

You will need
0.5m outer fabric
0.5m lining fabric
0.63m each of sew-in and fusible interfacings
23cm zipper
One coat snap
Two D-rings about 1.3cm in diameter, two self closing clasps and chains for optional shoulder strap
Punch needle and embroidery threads for punch needle embellishment

How to Sew a Clutch Purse
  1.  Cut one 30.5*56cm piece from outer, lining, and interfacing, to be used for flap/back/divider. If flap will be embellished with punch needle embroidery, mark, but do not cut, purse dimensions on outer fabric; this allows outer fabric to be placed in a hoop.
  2. Apply fusible interfacing to wrong side of lining. Mark fold line of flap 38.7cm from one short end of outer fabric and lining pieces; determine and mark shape of flap. Work punch needle design if desired. Baste sew-in interfacing to outer fabric. Cut flaps, allowing 6 mm seam allowances.
  3. Cut one 30.5*39.3cm piece from outer fabric, lining and interfacings to be used for the divider/front. Cut one 4.5*10cm fabric strip for D ring tabs. Apply fusible interfacing to the wrong side of the lining piece; baste sew-in interfacing to wrong side of outer fabric.
  4. Center zipper on one short end of lining piece for front/divider, right sides together, aligning raw edge of fabric to edge of zipper tape; glue baste. Place outer fabric right side down over lining, sandwiching the zipper between the layers; glue baste. Stitch 6mm seam.
  5. Pin the lining and outer fabric together at opposite short end of front/divider, right sides together; stitch 6mm seam. Turn right side out; press. Top stitch both seams.
  6. Stay stitch the outer fabric and lining pieces for flap/back/divider for 2.5cm at marks for flap fold line, 6mm from edge; clip to stitching at marks.
  7. Pin purse flap to lining, right sides together; stitch around flap in 6mm seam, beginning and ending stitching at clips.
  8. Stitch remaining side of zipper to flap/back/divider at end opposite the flap as in step 4. Turn right side out; press. Top stitch seam.
  9. Press tab strip in half lengthwise, wrong sides together. Open and press raw edges to the center crease wrong sides together; refold at the original crease.
  10. Stitch close to folded edges of tab strip. Cut two 5cm pieces from strips. Insert one piece into D ring; stitch ends together. Repeat for remaining piece.
  11. Fold purse at zipper with outer fabrics together. Mark stitching lines for zipped divider 15cm below zipper and 3.8cm from sides. Insert one tab at each side, 1.3cm below zipper. Stitch on marked lines through all layers, catching tabs in stitching.
  12. Pin sides of front/divider, right sides together, matching edges; do not pin through flap/back/divider. Stitch 6mm seam; finish the seam allowances. Turn right side out.
  13. Fold the flap/back/divider right sides together matching clipped edge to top of the divider; pin at sides. Stitch 6mm seam; finish the seam allowances. Turn purse right side out; press.
  14. Edge stitch around flap and back section of purse, catching lining in stitching at bottom. Edge stitch purse front at sides and bottom. Secure the snap to the flap and purse front. Attach chain shoulder strap to D rings, using self closing clasps.
