Prevention Is Better Than Cure.......... Allergies

Today, we are starting a new series of entries to raise awareness among our readers about diseases and illnesses that affect our health directly and indirectly. In doing so we hope to help our readers regarding these diseases to prevent them from future damage. Health is very important. We only sense it when we are sick actually because we invest a tremendous amount of energy, time and money to restore our health once we are sick. A simple cold can ruin your day. But with correct methodology we all can prevent these illnesses and be healthy and strong. For that we believe, we have to identify the diseases/illnesses first. To fight them of or to prevent them harming our families we have to be thorough with them, their causative agents etc. So, today's one will be Allergies.

Allergies
What are allergies exactly??? Allergies are described as hypersensitivity disorders of the immune system. They occur when someone's immune system reacts to normally harmless things. These substances are called an allergen. These reactions are acquired, predictable, and rapid. Allergic reactions are very clear due to activity of mast cells; a type of White Blood Cell and basophils another type of WBC. They are activated by the antibody Immunoglobulin E (IgE). This activation gives rise to inflammatory responses inside body. They are uncomfortable to bear up and fatal if untreated quickly enough. This is the base action of an allergy.

Allergy Causes
Allergy is like toffee. There are different toffees with different tastes but collectively we call them toffee. So just like that, there are different types of allergies. Mainly it varies depending on the allergen. If two genetically  different (non relative) people have allergies, their allergens may not be the same. It actually does not have to be the same even if they are blood relatives. Allergies can be also caused by features like age, gender, race etc. Hay fever is an allergy which is very common in human population with symptoms of red eyes, itchiness, and runny nose, eczema, hives, hay fever, or an asthma attack. Most of allergies are due to food allergens. For example we can say sensitivity to peanuts, prawns, tree nuts, including pecans, pistachios, pine nuts, and walnuts. But these sometimes can be out grown by children school age. Other food allergens include sesame seeds, poppy seeds, Eggs, Milk, cheese, beef, soy, wheat, fish, shellfish, fruits, vegetables, spices, synthetic and natural colors, chicken, and chemical additives. These are if you have noticed, protein allergens that cause severe suffering. There are non food protein allergens. They are, Latex, Banana, avocado, kiwifruit, and chestnut, poison ivy, eastern poison oak, western poison oak, or poison sumac.
Allergies are also caused due to hygiene issues too. Mostly people are allergic to cat fur, dogs and some are allergic to flowers like roses and sun flower, and sometimes or some bee sting or ants, dust etc. These are only few among many allergens and still there are allergies where doctors couldn't find any allergen.

Symptoms
Most Common symptoms are swelling of the nasal mucosa, redness in eyes, itching of the conjunctiva, Sneezing, coughing, broncho constriction, wheezing and dyspnea, sometimes outright attacks of asthma, in severe cases the airway constricts due to swelling known as laryngeal edema, Ears feeling of fullness, possibly pain, and impaired hearing due to the lack of eustachian tube drainage, Skin rashes, such as eczema and hives, Gastrointestinal tract abdominal pain, bloating, vomiting, diarrhea etc.

Prevention Is Better Than Cure
Once you study the allergy and its allergen, you will get a clear idea about what cause/ causes that cause your allergy. So that you can avoid these causes or allergens as much as possible. But if by accident you allergy takes over your body, do not panic but rush to a hospital immediately. It would be appropriate to carry some medical history in your purse or bag at all times with earlier prescribed medication if you have.
