Prevention Is Better Than Cure.......... Migraine

Howdy people!!! I hope you guys are doing fine. Well, today we are going to learn about Migraine. Ohh!!! One of the most irritating illnesses in this world. What is Migraine really??? Well Migraine is a common type of a headache. It further pushes into details like vomiting, nausea etc. Some have vision problems as result of this. So let's get to know it first then.

Migraine- Identify it
Migraine usually can appear in any stage of life but mostly it shows symptoms during ages of 10 to 45. Another thing you have to know is that this can be in family rather than the normal individual headache. Mostly women are prone to this than men. Migraine is not just another headache. It is due to abnormal brain activity. What you have to understand here is that this is not due to serious medical problems like brain tumor or cancer but simply the abnormal activity triggered by a certain causative agent.

They say when you get the attack you get something like an aura prior to the attack that might even disturb your vision in both sides. But this is not for every person. Migraine attacks can vary for mild to severe. Usually it starts from behind the eye or in the back of the head with neck pain and mostly it is the same side of the head than aches in each time in most cases. Other symptoms are like a throbbing pain on one side of the head that keeps growing by the time, usually it lasts for about 6 to 48 hours, chills, Increased urination, Fatigue, Loss of appetite, Nausea and vomiting, Numbness, tingling, or weakness, Problems concentrating, trouble finding words, Sensitivity to light or sound, Sweating

Causes
What triggers Migraine can be stress, some food etc. Also migraine attacks can be found due to factors like
Allergic reactions
Alcohol
Bright lights
Certain odors or perfumes
Changes in hormone levels
Changes in sleep patterns
Exercise
Loud noises
Missed meals
Physical or emotional stress
Smoking or exposure to smoke
Any processed, fermented, pickled, or marinated foods
Baked goods
Chocolate
Dairy products
Foods containing monosodium glutamate (MSG)
Foods containing tyramine, which includes red wine, aged cheese, smoked fish, chicken livers, figs, and certain beans
Fruits (avocado, banana, citrus fruit)
Meats containing nitrates (bacon, hot dogs, salami, cured meats)
Nuts
Onions
Peanut butter

What you can do??
First of all if you feel that you have this or any kind of a headache go to your doctor and converse with him regarding the symptoms. There are no specific test to prove that what you have is migraine but you can get a CT scan or a MRI  in brain done to be thorough. An EEG may be needed to rule out seizures. A lumbar puncture (spinal tap) might be done.
These are what your doctor can do. You yourself can keep an eye on your headache by recording the times, what triggered the headache, how severe they are etc. When you get the attack, prepare for it. Drink water to avoid dehydration, rest plenty, avoid bright lights, avoid loud sounds.
Doctors may have prescribed you some medicine in order to stop an attack or depress it. They might consist of
Antidepressants such as amitriptyline
Blood pressure medicines such as beta blockers (propanolol) or calcium channel blockers (verapamil)
Seizure medication such as valproic acid, gabapentin, and topiramate
Selective norepinephrine uptake inhibitor (SNRIs) such as venlafaxine
Botulinum toxin (Botox) injections may also help reduce migraine attacks.

Every person responds differently to treatment. Some people have rare headaches that require little to no treatment. Others require the use of several medications or even occasional hospitalization.

Prevention is better than cure
Understanding your headache and its triggers is the main key to avoid attacks. Change your life style accordingly and your environment. Smoking and alcohol are triggers for many diseases so avoid them as much as possible. Have regular exercise and have plenty of sleep. Avoid stress as much as possible and try to relax yourself.
